What makes a Rust server good for a beginner?

A stable population, a predictable wipe schedule and rules that actually limit clan size. The busiest beginner servers are at the top of this list right now, but read the owner's rules on the server page before you spend a wipe there. A server that names itself noob-friendly is not the same as one that enforces it.

Is a solo server better than a group server for learning Rust?

Solo and duo servers remove the biggest early threat, which is a clan with more players and more guns than you. You will still get killed, but the fights are closer to fair. If you have friends, a trio or quad cap gives you help without letting an 8-man dominate the map.

Should I play vanilla or modded as a new player?

Vanilla teaches the game as Facepunch made it, and unstated gather rates on a beginner server usually mean vanilla. Modded 2x servers are a reasonable middle ground: faster farming, but no kit spam or inflated loot tables. Anything at 5x or above changes the pace so much that the habits you learn won't transfer to vanilla.

Do beginner Rust servers protect new players?

Some do, through spawn protection, lower upkeep or no kill-on-sight rules, but this list only reflects the words in a server's name. Boongarust does not vet beginner servers, so the name tells you what the owner wants you to think. Check the server's own rules and population history before you rely on it.
