What counts as a Rust build server?

Any server that gives you free or spawned resources, instant building, and usually noclip or god mode so you can inspect what you made. They exist to test designs: footprints, bunkers, raid costs. You are not meant to survive there, you are meant to build without gathering.

Are build servers free to join?

Yes. They are public Rust servers, the same as any other on this list. Some owners run them as a side project next to a main server, some are standalone sandboxes. You need the game, not a subscription.

Will my build survive the next wipe?

Usually not. Many of these servers reset the world every few hours, and the Last wipe column shows how long the current map has been up. Treat anything you build as disposable. If you need persistence, that is what a normal server is for.

Why do build servers show up as modded?

Because free resources, noclip and instant building are modifications. Facepunch requires any server that adds those to sit in the Modded tab. A build server there is not advertising cheats, it is filing itself correctly.
